Babies are so expensive! How can I save money? TOP

Babies are sure to add some expenses to your budget, but there are some simple things you can do to save money. In our culture, we buy a LOT of unnecessary products for our children. It's time we simplify our lives- our children will be better for it! If you have money saving tips that you'd like to share, please send them to me so that we can all benefit!

Here are a few suggestions:

Forget the Stroller! Strollers aren't necessary- they are big, bulky and difficult to manuever in tight spaces. The more practical, less expensive and extremely more beneficial option is to get a baby carrier(s). You can use a baby carrier any time- to go for a walk, fixing dinner, cleaning the house, shopping, etc. There are no limits to the use of a baby carrier. Many more uses and a fraction of the cost of a stroller.

Use Cloth! Cloth diapers are better for baby, the planet, and your wallet. Most cloth diapers, compared to the use of disposables, pay for themselves inside of 6 months. Plus, you can use them for subsequent children. If you don't plan on having any more children, you can sell them when you're done to recoup some of your costs. Can't say that about disposables! And don't limit yourself, use cloth wipes, hankerchiefs and menstrual pads- you'll save a ton!

Cosleep! Sharing the family bed has so many benefits, but one big one is that you already have everything you need. Skip buying a crib, crib bedding, monitors, etc. Plus, everyone will get sleep- you'll be so rested, you'll be the envy of the block.

Breastfeed! Besides being the perfect food for your baby, you'll save tons not buying formula, bottles, and accessories. You'll also save on doctor bills as breastfed babies are healthier, requiring fewer visits to the doctor.

Skip buying toys! Instead, look around your house and you'll find a plethora of toys for baby. For example, I take our vitamin bottles (I have lots!), drop in a few cherrios and voila! shakers! One of my daughter's favorites is a toothbrush, great for teething! There are so many unsafe toys out there, save your money and your worry. If you do want some toys around, look into natural toys; wooden blocks, play silks, things that encouage creativity and imaginative play.

Make your own baby food! The jarred baby food is extremely expensive for what you get. Invest in a Magic Bullet (I love mine!) and Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron and get cooking. You can make your own fresh, nutritious food in just a few minutes- and you'll save an incredible amount of money.

Invest in a few books. By doing your own research on topics such as home health care, baby care and herbal remedies, you can save a lot, especially on doctor bills. The more educated you are, the better off your family will be. You'll save money by not having to go to the doctor to hear him/her say that everything is fine.

Take your Vitamins! Research shows that for every $1 you spend on preventative care (i.e. vitamin supplements), you save $28 in doctor bills. Not all supplements are the same- you get what you pay for. I use Shaklee products for my family; the company has been around for over 50 years. The Landmark Study shows that those who took Shaklee products had markedly better health than those who didn't supplement or used other brands. For more info on this study, click here.

Ask for hand-me-downs! Babies out-grow their clothes and toys far earlier than they wear out. Put the word out in your neighborhood, church, rec center, etc that you are looking to take some hand-me-downs. Most people just hang on to things because they aren't sure what to do with it, so ask around!

Skip these unnecessary items:

  • Changing tables (and pads)- if you have a bed, ottoman, or floor, these work just fine and can actually be safer.
  • Play yard- unless you need a safe place because of dogs or a messy house, the floor is better than these small contraptions. The time that you get to use it doesn't really pay off with their cost.
  • A bunch of clothes- keep it simple. The one-piece outfits are best; onesies, rompers and pajamas. Whoever thought that dresses were functional for babies was crazy, sure they're cute, but not very practical.
  • Baby shoes- Once baby is walking, go with soft soled shoes. Hard soled shoes are shown to prohibit baby's learning of how to walk properly.
  • Walkers- these are also shown to inhibit baby's learning of how to walk. Plus, they are very dangerous; how many times have you heard of one going down the stairs (with baby inside)?
  • Baby bath tub- we've never used ours. I take baths with Noah and shower her with me. Plus, when they're little, the kitchen sink works great.

Things I do recommend investing in:

  • A Rocking Chair or Glider- find one that is comfortable, with padding as you may be spending quite a bit of time in it. (Padding on the arms and a stool is a BIG plus.)
  • Cloth Diapers- truely a very wise and practical investment.
  • A baby carrier (or a couple of different styles) and the Tummy 2 Tummy dvd- you'll learn so many ways to safely and comfortably carry your baby.
  • A nursing pillow- this will get lots os use for nursing as well as propping baby up and play.
  • A subscription to Mothering magazine. There is so much wonderful, helpful and encouraging information in this publication.

Why Breastfeed? TOP

Breastfeeding provides many nutritional and health benefits to your baby.

  • Breast-Feeding Best Bet for Babies. New parents want to give their babies the very best. When it comes to nutrition, the best first food for babies is breast milk. More than two decades of research have established that breast milk is perfectly suited to nourish infants and protect them from illness. Breast-fed infants have lower rates of hospital admissions, ear infections, diarrhea, rashes, allergies, and other medical problems than bottle-fed babies. (FDA - U.S. Food and Drug Administration)
  • The protein in breast milk "kick-starts" a baby's immune system. (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences)
  • It is estimated that artificially fed children have 14 times as many hospitalizations as breastfed babies. (The Journal of Human Lactation, No. 2, 1993)
  • The World Health Organization and many other experts encourage women to breastfeed for as long as possible, one year or even longer, because human milk provides the best nutrition and protection against infections. (Breastfeeding Guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics) The AAP also recommends that infants consume breast milk exclusively for the first six months of life, thereafter combining breast milk with slowly introduced solid foods through the end of the first year.
  • There are over 100 nutritional components of breast milk not found in formula that are especially beneficial, including: cholesterol, an important component of brain tissue and the biochemical basis for many enzymes in the body; and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which is important for a baby's brain function and visual and auditory development.
  • Breastfeeding significantly reduces the incidence and severity of diabetes, childhood cancer, obesity, and asthma, as well as diminishing a baby's risk of allergies, diarrheal infections, ear infections, lower-respiratory infections, bacterial meningitis, urinary tract infections, and many diseases. Studies have shown that even four months of breastfeeding may lower the incidence of some childhood-onset cancers, Crohn's disease, Hodgkin's disease, and childhood-onset diabetes. (American Academy of Pediatrics)
  • And with regard to diabetes and improving glucose homeostasis, a new study suggests that breastfeeding may have similar protective qualities for both infants and their mothers. Women who breast-fed for at least one year were about 15 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who never breast-fed their infants. For each additional year of breast-feeding, there was an additional 15 percent decreased risk. (Journal of American Medical Association, Volume 294 No. 20, November 2005)
  • Breast milk delivers passive and active antibodies to all of the diseases the mother has been exposed to.
  • Breast milk enhances cognitive scores and acts as an analgesic during painful medical procedures. (American Academy of Pediatrics)
  • A study following rural Chinese mothers found that those who breastfed for two years or longer reduced their risk of breast cancer by 50 percent. (American Journal of Epidemiology) Additional benefits for mothers include a reduced risk of ovarian cancer as well as an earlier return to pre-pregnancy weight.
  • Mothers who choose to breastfeed build healthier bones for themselves. Although lactation initially causes bone loss, the "lost" bone is recovered within two years of delivery with new bone. Breastfeeding offers mothers the unique opportunity to repair or remodel tiny bone fractures, which could actually make bones stronger and more resistant to osteoporosis fractures later in life. (Baylor College of Medicine) Johns Hopkins University is now conducting a study to determine the positive impact of pregnancy on bone structure.
  • In a 1994 study, breast cancer rates were compared between women who had breastfed for various lengths of time and women who never lactated. If you set the frequency of pre-menopausal breast cancer among the women who never lactated at 1.00, then the relative risk of breast cancer for women who had lactated was: lactated 3 months or less .85; lactated 4-12 months .78; lactated 13-24 months .66; lactated 24+ months .72; and for all who lactated .78. (Newcomb, P.A., et. al. The New England Journal of Medicine 330(2): 81-87)
  • Also in 1994, a study looked at whether having been breastfed protected women from breast cancer when they grew up. For both pre-menopausal and post-menopausal breast cancer, women who were breastfed as children, even if only for a short time, had a 25% lower risk of developing breast cancer than women who were bottle-fed as an infant. (Freudenheim, J., et. al. Epidemiology 5: 324-331)
  • Leukemia is the leading cause of cancer deaths in children under age 15 in the United States. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) accounted for 78% of all U.S. childhood leukemia cases diagnosed form 1975 to 1995, while acute myeloid leukemia (AML) accounted for 16%. Recent studies have suggested that children who breastfed longer than 6 months had a 24% reduced risk of ALL and a 15% reduced risk of AML. Short-term breastfeeding (shorter than 6 months), similarly, was protective for ALL (12% reduced risk) and for AML (10% reduced risk). (Environmental Health Perspectives, Vol. 113, Number 2, February 2005)
  • Breastfeeding may protect children against gluten intolerance or celiac disease. Gluten is a protein found in cereals such as wheat, rye, and barley, and infants who were being regularly breastfed when they were first introduced to foods containing gluten cut their risk of developing celiac disease by 52% compared with those who were not being breastfed. (Archives of Disease in Childhood, November 2005)
  • Breastfeeding is an ecologically sound choice as the production and packaging of infant formulas takes a heavy toll on the earth's resources. An estimated 87,230 tons of tin and paper end up in landfills due to formula consumption. (La Leche League, May 2002)
  • Breastfeeding saves money - a potential annual savings from exclusive breastfeeding of $3.6 billion in decreased costs of public health programs, reduced absenteeism, and reduced environmental and energy burdens. (American Academy of Pediatrics)
  • Breastfeeding clearly improves the health of infants and mothers and seems to result in cost savings for parents, insurers, employers, and society, meaning that the medical and economic value of breastfeeding is high. To reap the health and economic benefits associated with breastfeeding, society must support breastfeeding promotion, which most likely will necessitate a coordinated U.S. breastfeeding program. The U.S. government is in a unique position to accomplish this goal as it views the associated costs from the joint perspectives of employer, health insurer, medical provider, and society. Through support of such a program, the U.S. government likely will benefit significantly by improving the health of children and its financial bottom line. (Department of Pediatrics and Steele Memorial Research Center, University of Arizona, Tucson, February 2001)

Which Motherlove Lactation Aid Is Best For Me? TOP

More Milk Plus liquid herbal extracts
Motherlove's best selling product to increase breast milk. Fenugreek, the dominant herb in this blend, is highly recommended by lactation consultants. This product works for most women whose milk supply has decreased due to growth spurts, separation, illness or stress. Available in a grain alcohol or alcohol-free (glycerin) base. Not for use during pregnancy.

More Milk Plus vegetarian capsules
A liquid extract concentrate in vegetarian capsules, alcohol free, convenient and easy to use. Not for use during pregnancy.

More Milk
This blend does not contain fenugreek for those who may be sensitive to its potential side effects. This sensitivity, usually gastric upset, may occur in either mother or baby.

More Milk Special Blend
Specially formulated at the request of lactation consultants, this blend adds goat's rue to our popular More Milk Plus formula. Goat's rue helps develop mammary tissue for women who may have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), those who have had breast reduction surgery, adoptive mothers, as well as women who need extra support in boosting milk supply. Available in grain alcohol or alcohol-free (glycerin) base. Not for use during pregnancy.

Goat's Rue
This is one of the most potent herbs to increase breast milk. By stimulating the development of mammary tissue, it allows adoptive mothers to successfully breastfeed, as well as women with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and women who have had breast reduction surgery. It is also used to increase breast size in non-lactating women. Available in a liquid extract or vegetarian capsules.

More Milk Two
This product is specially formulated to safely increase breast milk while pregnant and nursing. It contains 3 herbs: raspberry leaf, nettles and alfalfa that increase milk as well as provide benefits for pregnant women. Alcohol-Free.

What is the suggested use for these products?

Liquid Extracts
Under 175 lbs: 1/4 tsp (1ml) 4 times a day
Over 175 lbs: 1/2 tsp (2ml) 3 times a day
Vegetarian Capsules:
Under 175 lbs: 1 capsule 4 times a day
Over 175 lbs: 2 capsules 3 times a day

These products can be taken with a small amount (1-2 oz.) of liquid . For maximum effectiveness, avoid drinking liquids 20 minutes before or after each use. Most women see an increase in milk supply with the More Milk Plus products within 1-2 days. It does take longer, usually 2-3 weeks, to see an effect if taking goat's rue to support mammary tissue development.

How long will my Motherlove product last at the suggested amounts?

This depends on dose and body weight, here is the approximate time each size will last:
60 caps 10 days - 2 weeks
120 caps 20 days - 4 weeks
2 oz. 10 days - 2 weeks
4 oz. 20 days - 4 weeks
8 oz. 40 days - 8 weeks

What can be done to help ensure Motherlove product effectiveness?

Be sure you are taking the correct amount for your body weight according to the suggested use on the label. These products may be taken with 1-2 oz. of liquid. Although it is important to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, for maximum effectiveness avoid drinking liquids 20 minutes before or after each dose. Drinking more liquids than specified with each use may dilute the herbs in your system. If your supply still is not adequate, you may add 1 or 2 doses a day, up to 6 times a day. And, if after following these guidelines, you do not see an increase, there may be a more appropriate Motherlove formula for you.

Which works better, liquid extracts or vegetarian capsules?

Both should be equally effective. Liquid extracts are more quickly absorbed through the mucus membranes in the mouth than the capsules, which take about 1/2 hour to digest and enter the system. The extracts cost less, but many women prefer the vegetarian capsules for convenience and ease of use.

What is the difference between Motherlove alcohol based extracts and the alcohol-free extracts?

Initially, both products are extracted in alcohol and water. An alcohol/water blend is the preferred medium as it extracts the widest range of constituents from the herbs. The amount of alcohol in the finished extract is minimal and is not contraindicated in breastfeeding, but it does have a sharp taste.

In the alcohol-free products, the alcohol is slowly steamed away, without removing the important constituents. Glycerin, a sweet syrup derived from coconuts, is then added to replace the alcohol.

We offer alcohol-free choices in the More Milk Plus, More Milk, Special Blend and More Milk Two products. Our More Milk Plus Vegetarian Capsules and Goat's Rue Vegetarian Capsules are also alcohol-free.

Does the alcohol affect my baby?

The American Academy of Pediatrics states that a small amount of alcohol is compatible with breastfeeding, and that any alcohol is out of the breast milk within two hours after consuming. A good time to take the extract, therefore, is right after breastfeeding. Dispensing each amount in 1-2 oz. hot water removes much of the alcohol. Motherlove does have alcohol-free liquid extracts and vegetarian capsules available.

How long should I use Motherlove liquid extracts or vegetarian capsules?

Every mother's needs vary. Some women are able to use these products for a short time to increase their milk supply, and when supply and demand takes over, no additional product is needed. Others, once their milk supply increases to the desired level, are able to decrease the amount or number of doses per day to maintain the desired supply of breast milk. Some women may need to use Motherlove's lactation products the entire time they are nursing to maintain their milk supply. We encourage women to use the amount that best meets their baby's growing demands.

What is the difference between Motherlove herbal liquid extracts and capsules and dried powdered herb teas and capsules?

Motherlove liquid extracts are made with certified organic herbs picked and processed at peak potency. A liquid extract maintains this quality and has a high rate of absorbability. Dried powdered herbs lose potency over time, making them less effective.

Are these herbs safe?

These are herbs that are used daily for food in many countries. Fenugreek and fennel are in Middle Eastern cuisine. Fenugreek is also used to make imitation maple flavoring. Nettle, called a "storehouse of nutrition", is a wonderful spring green when cooked and is full of valuable minerals such as iron, calcium and other trace minerals. Goat's rue and fenugreek are fed to animals as fodder. Blessed thistle is most often recommended to strengthen the liver.

Are there any known side effects from Motherlove products?

Fenugreek may cause increased perspiration, gas and/or loose stools, and the body may excrete a maple syrup-like smell. Fenugreek and goat's rue can lower blood sugar levels, but it usually takes much larger amounts than those contained in our products. Women who are insulin dependent or hypoglycemic may want to consult with a health care practitioner. As with any ingested food or product, if adverse effects appear in mother or baby, discontinue use.

Are allergic reactions to Motherlove herbal extracts possible?

Any ingested food has the potential for allergic reaction. The liquid extracts do not contain any milk, dairy, egg, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, gluten or soy. The vegetarian capsules do contain non-GMO soy lecithin. Fenugreek andGoat's Rue are in the legume family, as are soy and peanuts. Those with allergies to plants in this family should use these products with caution. Discontinue use if side effects appear in mother or baby.

Are Motherlove products gluten-free?

Yes, all Motherlove products are gluten-free.

Can Motherlove products be used with other medications?

These products can be taken along with many other medications. Please call us with any concerns or ask your Doctor.

What causes an inadequate supply of breast milk and what can I do to increase it? TOP

What causes an inadequate supply of breast milk?

An inadequate or low supply of breast milk can result for a variety of reasons. These include poor nutrition, stress, the baby's inability to latch on properly or suck hard enough to stimulate milk production, and the comfort level the mother has with nursing. Most women can produce more breast milk by properly addressing these issues. Confer with a lactation consultant for help in determining the cause of low milk supply.

What can women do to increase their supply of milk?

  • Galactogogue herbs have gained a reputation for increasing breast milk from years of historical use. Drink teas or take liquid herbal extracts such as tinctures (alcohol and water base) or alcohol free glycerites of the following herbs: fenugreek, blessed thistle, nettle, anise, dill, fennel seed, goat's rue, raspberry leaf, and alfalfa. Motherlove's More Milk contains blessed thistle, nettle, and fennel seed. More Milk Plus contains fenugreek seed, blessed thistle, nettle and fennel seed. More Milk Two, for women who are nursing an older baby and are pregnant, contains raspberry leaf, nettles and alfalfa. Our newest combination More Milk Special Blend, adds Goat's Rue to the popular More Milk Plus formula. Avoid parsley and sage, which decrease breast milk.
  • Nutrition: Eat a well-rounded diet with adequate calories (even more than during pregnancy) that includes vitamins and minerals with levels high enough for yourself and to produce milk. You need foods high in calcium, iron, and protein. Avoid junk food. What you eat comes through your milk. You need adequate liquid so drink plenty of fresh water and herbal tea.
  • Lack of Confidence: Sometimes it takes time to feel comfortable with motherhood. It doesn't just come naturally for every new mother! Some may be uncomfortable with the new feelings of pleasure or pain while nursing. Find a place that is comfortable for you to nurse. You may want privacy or quiet until you feel comfortable. Having eye contact with your infant while you nurse can help you relax and feel a nurturing bond. Find a friend or support group to talk with.
  • Stress: Nursing does take a large amount of energy and can be emotionally draining, so it's important to find the stress relievers that work for you (quiet time alone, talking with someone, exercise, getting plenty of rest, taking a warm bath.) And, be sure to ask for help with the housework and siblings.
  • Visualization: Visualize the abundance of your milk as it effortlessly flows from you to nourish your child.

Where can I find more information?

  • The La Leche League has support groups throughout the country. Contact one in your area. There are also lactation consultants working in private practice and in hospitals to answer your questions. There is a lot of information on the internet at various lactation sites and chat groups.

What are the causes of Infertility? TOP

What are the causes of infertility?

The number of couples who face challenges with conception has been increasing over the last decade. For many, the pace of living is faster and stress levels are higher. People are eating devitalized foods on the run, and our bodies are constantly exposed to environmental toxins in the soil, in the water we drink, and in the air we breathe. The causes of infertility can be physical, mental, or emotional. Difficulty in conceiving is an opportunity for you and your partner to re-evaluate your physical, mental, and emotional health in all areas of your life.

  • Get a complete physical exam to determine if the cause of infertility is in your reproductive organs. The fallopian tubes can be blocked by scar tissue. Endometriosis can cause infertility, as well as ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids. Ovulation may be irregular, so chart the days you are fertile using a basal thermometer. An insufficient number of eggs may be released at ovulation, or there may be an incomplete implantation of the eggs. Avoid melatonin supplements, which may inhibit ovulation. Make sure that there are no abnormalities that block the flow of sperm. Check that the sperm count and mobility are high enough for conception. A Vitamin B12 (chlorophyll is a good source of B12) deficiency reduces sperm count and sperm mobility. Sperm are easily killed by heat, so avoid hot tubs and hot baths.
  • Adequate nutrition affects fertility. Both partners should eat a healthy diet that has sufficient amounts of vitamins, minerals, and protein. Be sure your diet includes adequate amounts of the vitamins B6, B12, A, C, and E. (Vitamin E has been called the "fertility vitamin.") The minerals calcium, magnesium, iron, and folic acid are also necessary to strengthen the endocrine glands. Essential fatty acids (EFA's) are necessary for normal glandular activity. EFA's are found in black currant seed oil, borage oil, evening primrose oil, and flaxseed oil. Try to eliminate smoking and caffeine. Recent studies have shown that men can improve their sperm count after 4 months by taking zinc supplements.
  • Low body weight is a factor in conception. Maybe gaining 5 pounds is all that is needed for you to be able to conceive.
  • Consider your exposure to toxic substances in your environment: pesticides, household cleaning products, excess radiation, or water and air pollution, and eliminate what you can to create a healthier atmosphere.

What are some possible ways to treat infertility?

Begin by doing some body cleansing. An optimum functioning liver is important in reproductive health. The liver is the main organ that filters toxins and removes them from your body. Dandelion root and milk thistle seed are two excellent herbs for the liver.

  • Use nutritional tonic herbs that assist in building the reproductive system. These include raspberry leaf and red clover, two herbs that in combination have been used in folklore to promote fertility. Drink teas with nettle and alfalfa, two herbs that are very high in nutrition, including folic acid and trace minerals needed by the hormonal system.
  • Choose herbs that help to regulate your menstrual cycle so you know exactly which days you are fertile. Herbs which are considered hormone balancers include vitex, dong quai, sarsparilla, and red clover. These herbs should be discontinued after conception.
  • Low thyroid function can upset hormone balance, as well as health problems affecting the pituitary and adrenal glands, which regulate the menstrual cycle.
  • Use a basal body thermometer, available at most women’s clinics or drugstores. They come with instructions on how to use them so that you can establish the days that you are fertile each month. Take your temperature each morning, it rises slightly on the day you ovulate. Your cervical mucus also changes at this time. Over-the-counter ovulation test kits (which work much like pregnancy tests) can also help you determine which days you are most fertile.
  • If you feel fatigued, stressed, and overworked, chances are that your reproductive energy is exhausted also. Find ways to nurture yourself if you are planning to take on the constant care of another. Consider meditation and regular exercise. Try getting a massage enhanced with essential oils that are known to relieve stress and tension such as jasmine, rose, lavender, rosemary, and clary sage.
  • Taking herbs that are relaxing and help to build the nervous system can also be helpful. Common ones include chamomile, scullcap, oat, and lemon balm.
  • Consider bodywork to remove any possible blocks in the energy meridians. Examples of energy work include polarity, reiki, shiatsu and acupuncture.
  • Homeopathy uses vibrational remedies that treat overall patterns of an individual's symptoms. In her book, Natural Healing for the Pregnant Woman (Perigree, 1997), Elizabeth Burch lists 10 possible homeopathic remedies to treat infertility along with the emotional and physical symptoms that each addresses. You may want to consult a homeopathic practitioner to find the exact remedy for you.
  • Remember that thought directs energy. Are you blocking your creative energy in any areas of your life? Are you blocking any of your emotions? Emotions affect hormones.
  • Visualize your reproductive organs full of life, alive with creative energy, and your womb as a welcoming, nurturing space.

What causes Morning Sickness? TOP

What causes morning sickness?

Morning sickness is caused by the rapid change in hormonal levels that occurs during the first weeks of pregnancy, often resulting in nausea. Other causes of morning sickness may include diet and emotional factors. Strong smells and certain foods can trigger nausea, so avoid these if you can. There are a percentage of lucky women who never feel any morning sickness at all, and most women begin to feel better at the beginning of the second trimester. If you have severe and/or long-term nausea, consult a doctor before you get seriously dehydrated.

What can I do?

The following are some suggestions that can alleviate, to some extent, morning sickness. If you have considered doing body cleansers at any time, before conception is an excellent time for both partners to do a liver cleanse and upgrade their diets. And, a liver that is working at optimum efficiency can relieve PMS symptoms and may help lessen nausea during early pregnancy.

Herbs: The following herbs are recommended if experiencing morning sickness.

  • Ginger: recommended for both morning sickness and sea sickness. Drink ginger tea or "ginger beer", or take ginger capsules (ginger tea with milk and honey will also help raise blood sugar.) Note: do not use excessive amounts of ginger.
  • Raspberry and mint tea.
  • Slippery elm: made into a nutritious gruel, is easily digested. You can also buy slippery elm lozenges to suck on.
  • Peach leaf tea.
  • Wild yam root tea or tincture in water.
  • Sucking on ice cubes made with any of these teas throughout the day may feel better than drinking cups of tea.

Nutrition: Eat small frequent meals with complex carbohydrates. Avoid high fat and junk foods. Eat a protein rich snack before you go to bed. Low blood sugar in the morning can cause morning sickness so eat something before you get out of bed. Drink plenty of liquids and remember that it may be easier to drink a nutritious broth for some of your meals. Take B complex vitamins, especially vitamin B6.

Homeopathy: Natural Healing For the Pregnant Woman, by Elizabeth Burch (see publisher information below), lists many symptoms of nausea along with specific remedies for each. Common remedies for nausea include ipecac, sepia, nux vomica, and arsenicum. Only take these remedies in a homeopathic form and consult a homeopathic practitioner if you have questions.

Flower Essences: Flower essences work on the emotions. They are made by placing flowers in a clear bowl filled with spring water, and infusing them in sunlight for several hours. The finished water is usually preserved with brandy or some other type of alcohol. Bach flower essences are probably best known because of Edward Bach's work in discovering their use on healing emotions. Mimulus and Scleranthus are two flower essences used for morning sickness.

Aromatherapy: Aromatherapy involves using a plant's essential oils, which are normally very strong, and should not be taken internally without supervision. Oils can be simply sniffed or used in a spritzer to relieve nausea, stress or headaches, or drops can be put on a handkerchief to inhale and use as a compress. Add a few drops of your favorite scent to a massage oil. Citrus smells help relax queasiness, so it may also be helpful to smell lemon slices.

Acupressure: Acupressure works by stimulating the energy meridians of the body, thus alleviating stress, increasing circulation, and relieving nausea and headaches. The acupressure points that control nausea are on the wrist crease, in line with the little finger, and in the hollow between the collarbones. Press and rub on these points throughout the day. Also, acupressure wrist bands are available in most drug stores for dealing with nausea and sea sickness.

Relaxation: Fears or apprehensions you may have of parenthood can cause stress. There are many ways to relieve this and other types of stress, so take the time to find those that work best for you. Quiet time alone, reading, and exercise can help. Fresh air also does wonders to relieve nausea, so get outside and breathe or keep the windows open to encourage air circulation. Daily meditation is very helpful -- bring your focus to a place of calm and centered-ness repeating "I am peace." Lay comfortably on the floor or bed and release any tension you have in your body. Start at your feet and work your way up your body, tensing and releasing all your muscle tension. Be sure to release all that you are holding onto in your belly. There are also relaxation tapes available on the market.

Visualization: Is there anything in your life that is making you "sick to your stomach?" Visualize yourself moving through it and letting go. See yourself as the radiantly healthy being that you are, creating a perfect vehicle for the soul that has chosen you to be its mother. You are part of a miracle!

What Herbs are useful during Pregnancy? TOP

Useful Herbs During Pregnancy

Several herbs have been safely used by women for generations that are an excellent source for the increased vitamins and minerals needed during pregnancy. These herbs can easily be made into teas and incorporated into meals on a regular basis. Every person is different, and your body may react differently now to foods than it did previously, but used wisely and in moderation, these herbs make wonderful teas and foods.

  • Raspberry leafis best known for strengthening the uterine muscles so they work more efficiently during labor. Drink raspberry leaf tea throughout pregnancy, with its easily assimilated content of calcium and magnesium, to relieve leg cramps. Also high in iron, the leaves and berries help prevent anemia. Raspberry leaf soothes an upset stomach and will help alleviate mild morning sickness. Taken after birth, it slows bleeding, helps the uterus regain tone, and increases breast milk.
  • Nettleleaves are a storehouse of nutrition, with high iron and calcium contents, as well as an excellent source of folic acid, an essential nutrient during pregnancy. Nettle strengthens the kidneys and adrenals, while it relieves fluid retention. Because nettle also supports the vascular system, it can prevent varicose veins and hemorrhoids. Postpartum, it increases breast milk. Nettle tea has a rich, green taste and can be mixed with other herbs. Cooked nettle is a mineral-rich substitute for spinach and an excellent side dish with a dash of lemon juice and sesame seeds. Try substituting nettle in lasagna. Pick it fresh from spring until mid summer, but be sure to wear gloves to protect your skin. Its nickname is "stinging nettle," but this sting disappears when cooked. Pick extra to freeze and have on hand for the winter months.
  • Oats, another herb high in calcium and magnesium, builds healthy bones and nourishes the nervous system. This is the perfect herb to relieve nervous exhaustion and allow for relaxed rest when sleep is difficult. An easy way to incorporate the healing power of oats, and its high fiber content, is to eat oatmeal cereal in the morning, along with oatmeal bread. Oatstraw tea has a mild flavor that can be used alone or mixed with other herbs. And a warm oatmeal bath is not only relaxing, it softens skin and relieves the itch of a growing belly.
  • Dandelion roottea increases digestion and promotes bile to relieve constipation. It is one of the best herbs for cleansing and strengthening the liver, our main detoxifying organ. The liver breaks down hormones no longer needed by the body after birth, and any drugs that may have been given at birth. Containing calcium and iron, roasted dandelion root's coffee-like flavor, is an excellent morning beverage. Add a handful of the fresh leaves, high in vitamin A, to other greens in salads. Drink dandelion leaf tea if a diuretic is needed to relieve fluid retention. Because of its high potassium content, it does not deplete the body of this important mineral, as other diuretics are known to do.
  • Alfalfa, with its deep root system, contains many essential nutrients including trace minerals, chlorophyll and vitamin K, a nutrient necessary for blood clotting. Many midwives advise drinking mild tasting alfalfa tea or taking alfalfa tablets during the last trimester of pregnancy to decrease postpartum bleeding or chance of hemorrhaging. Alfalfa also increases breast milk, as alfalfa hay is fed daily to milking goats and other dairy animals.
These common herbs are available in most natural health food stores and are well-worth using for their nutritionally-packed support during these special months of nurturing mother and child.

What is Postpartum Depression? TOP

What is Postpartum Depression (PPD)?

Childbirth takes a huge amount of energy, and after birth, there is a rapid change in body chemistry. It is not uncommon to feel overwhelmed and anxious about the many responsibilities of having a newborn. Symptoms of the "baby blues" include fatigue, crying, insomnia, anger, feelings of being alone, and the inability to concentrate. These symptoms are usually short-lived. However, if you are not feeling better after 2-3 weeks, or if your symptoms get more severe, you may have serious postpartum depression. Please seek medical advice.

What Can I Do?

Herbs: Hormonal imbalances and the rapid drop in progesterone after birth can create feelings of depression.

  • Vitexhelps stimulate progesterone production and balance the hormonal cycle.
  • Motherwortand lemon balm can help with mood swings and emotional balance.
  • Scullcap, oats, and chamomile are tonic herbs for nerves and stress.
  • St. John's wort is also used by nursing mothers.

Nutrition:

  • Calcium and magnesium soothe nerves and promote sleep.
  • Get adequate folic acid in your diet.
  • Cut down on coffee and caffeine.

Homeopathy: The following remedies are recommended for PPD: Sepia, Pulsatilla, Ignatia, Natrum mur, and Arsenicum album. Consult a homeopathic doctor to get the correct remedy for your specific symptoms.

Aromatherapy: The smell of clary sage, sandalwood, and citrus uplifts the spirits, so use these essences in a massage oil, bath, or sleep pillow. Put drops on a handkerchief to sniff throughout the day. Aromatherapy inhalers and spritzers are available at natural food stores. (See "Products.")

Bach Flower Essences:

  • Gorse: for discouragement and despondency.
  • Mustard: for deep gloom for no reason.
  • Sweet Chestnut: for mental anguish, hopeless despair, sorrow, exhaustion, loneliness.

Other Suggestions

  • Meditation: follow your breath, focus on an uplifting word or phrase.
  • Visualization: visualize "what brings me joy," or your radiant face, with a sparkle in your eyes and joy in your smile.
  • Start doing simple exercises to get movement flowing through you.
  • Get help with housework, cooking, and other small children.
  • Talk with close friends, or get professional help from a counselor.

Can I use Herbs during Labor? TOP

Can I Use Herbs During Labor?

Yes, herbs can be very useful during labor and after birth to ease pain, calm emotions, and help speed recovery. The following herbs have been use for years by midwives and birthing women. Look under the web site heading "Plant Info" for photos and more detailed information on several of these herbs.

  • Blue cohoshand black cohosh are two herbs that work synergistically to bring on labor (but do not use them before the last two weeks of pregnancy). During labor they can make contractions more efficient in a long, stalled labor, and help the uterus clamp down after birth.
  • Raspberry leaf(tea or tincture) is one of the best uterine tonic herbs to prepare uterine muscles for an efficient labor. Its astringent action slows bleeding and helps to expel the placenta. Have the tea on hand or make raspberry tea ice cubes to suck on during labor.

Many herbs can help ease the pain of contractions:

  • Crampbarkcan be used for uterine cramping during labor, and after birth to eliminate after birth cramping pains.
  • Scullcap and catnip relieve pain, as well as calm and relax the body.
  • Chamomilehelps control pain during labor by relieving tension.

Other herbs help with emotional balance during labor:

  • Motherwortis one of the best herbs to give immediate emotional balance during the ups and downs of labor, but it may increase uterine bleeding.
  • Rescue Remedy, a Bach flower remedy, is excellent for bringing one quickly into focus when under stress or shock during a difficult labor. It can also be put on the baby's forehead or wrist after a stressful birth.
  • A massage oil, enhanced with herbs, will relax the muscles and ease back labor pain. Use relaxing, aromatic herbs such as chamomile, rose, and lavender. Rubbed on the perineum, it helps prevent tearing as the baby crowns and ease swelling and burning.
  • Essential oils in a mister can give clarity and focus. Clary Sage gives a sense of well being and combats mental fatigue. During birth it helps focus breathing and calm anxiety. Geranium essential oil balances emotions and works well for perineal massage, as it stimulates circulation. Lavender is calming and strengthening, relieving depression and irritability. Citrus essential oils are clean, refreshing and uplifting. Be sure that essential oils are used in a carrier oil or mister and not applied directly to or on the skin.
  • Shepherd's Pursetincture is the best herb to quickly stop postpartum hemorrhaging. Every midwife should have it with her in case an emergency situation arises.
  • After the birth, use a sitz bath to soak the perineum, heal any tears, shrink swelling, and slow bleeding. It helps the perineum to heal quickly, and makes walking more comfortable. Herbs to use include yarrow, uva ursi, witch hazel, Shepherd's purse, and garlic.
  • Fill a plastic squirt bottle with a strong herbal tea of these herbs to squirt on your perineum as you urinate to lessen any burning and heal tears.
  • Homeopathic arnica pills, taken every few hours for several days after the birth, help reduce bruising and swelling of the perineal tissue. Be sure you are taking arnica internally only in homeopathic form, as arnica tincture prevents clotting and should not be taken internally.

Can you tell me about engorged breasts and Mastitis? TOP

What Causes an Engorged Breast?

A breast becomes engorged when there is a rapid increase in the milk supply (often when breast milk first comes in), and the milk is not completely drained in nursing. Breasts will feel tender and hard. Engorgement can also occur when the milk ducts are plugged. There may be spots of dried milk on ducts, which should be cleaned from the nipple.

What Should I Do?

Plugged ducts and engorgement can usually be cleared up within 24-48 hrs.

  • It is important to empty the affected breast. Nurse frequently, massaging your breast gently toward the nipple while nursing.
  • If it is too painful to nurse, express milk by hand while in a warm shower or tub or hang your breast over the sink and run water over it, as you gently massage toward the nipple.
  • Do not wear tight fitting clothes or nipple shields across the breast.
  • Warm, moist heat applied with a compress or hot water bottle will help unplug the ducts and ease swelling. Herbs that work well in a breast compress are anti-inflammatory and reduce swelling (comfrey, chamomile, calendula, lavender), increase lymph circulation and drainage (cleavers, burdock root, yarrow), and draw out infection (slippery elm, marshmallow root). Mullein leaf relieves pain. Pour boiling water over the herbs and steep 10-15 minutes. When cool enough to touch, apply herbs as a poultice, or dip a cotton cloth in the warm infusion, wring it out and wrap around the breast and under the armpit. Keep the poultice on until it cools. Reapply throughout the day. If infection is present, a clean poultice or cloth should be used every time. See Motherlove's Breast-Ease.
  • Try a grated potato or cabbage leaves on an engorged breast to draw out inflammation. It can be mixed with hot water or applied cold, whichever feels better.
  • A home remedy that has been used successfully to unplug ducts is to drink a small amount of undiluted apple cider vinegar.

What is Mastitis?

Mastits is an engorged breast that is accompanied by infection, high fever, and flu-like symptoms. The breast is more painful and hard, and may be streaked with red. Mastitis can become very serious. Seek medical attention if the infection persists.

What Should I Do?

It is very important to rest! Mastitis commonly occurs when one is overtired and not taking the time to rest.

Continue to express milk by nursing or by hand. Apply moist heat and compresses as described with plugged ducts.

Drink plenty of fluids - herb teas, nutritional broths and soups. Useful herb teas include yarrow and elderflower to break a fever.

Take an echinacea tincture every 2-4 hours along with Vitamin C to fight infection.

Homeopathic Phytolacca works very well for most women.

What can I do about sore nipples and thrush? TOP

What Can I do About Sore Nipples?

  • Change your nursing position often to find one that is the most comfortable. Try to relax and express some milk so that it is flowing when the baby latches on. Be sure to empty your breasts so that you do not become engorged.
  • Bathe your breasts in fresh air and sunlight as often as possible.
  • Do not use soap on your nipples.
  • Apply a salve on your nipples that contains olive oil and skin healing herbs such as calendula, chamomile, marshmallow (see Motherlove's Nipple Cream). Yarrow, aloe vera, and honey also heal cracks and promote rapid healing, but need to be washed off before nursing.
  • Apply warm, wet black tea bags, which contain tannin.
  • You may have thrush, a yeast infection that causes sore, cracked nipples.

What Is Thrush?

Thrush is a yeast infection that grows in moist places, such as in the folds of a baby's skin. It appears as red, irritated patches on the neck, armpits and thighs; and as white patches on the tongue and insides of the cheeks. It can also be a diaper rash that doesn't clear up easily. When thrush spreads to a nursing mother's nipples, it makes nursing painful. The nipples are red, itchy, cracked, and sometimes have white patches. Both the mother and infant should be treated to keep from re-infecting each other, even when the symptoms appear in only one.

What can I do?

Treating thrush effectively takes a holistic approach, including diet and household hygiene.

  • You can treat thrush similarly to a yeast infection. Eat foods to rebalance live cultures in the intestines. These foods include miso, yogurt that contains live cultures, and liquid or powdered acidophilus. Acidophilus can be diluted for babies and swabbed in their mouth. Probiotic combinations are available in capsules that will increase the "good" intestinal flora. These are available for infants as well. Eat fewer foods made with yeast and cut down on sugar in your diet.
  • Boost the immune system with Vitamin C, zinc, B complex, echinacea, and garlic capsules.
  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water to help prevent thrush from spreading. Yeast can live on towels, so you may want to use paper towels until all signs of thrush disappear. Wash bath towels in hot water after each use and add distilled white vinegar to the final rinse (yeast cannot survive the distillation and PH). At the very least, be sure towels dry thoroughly between use.
  • Sanitize all items that come in contact with the baby's mouth or breast milk in hot water or run them through the dishwasher to keep yeast from spreading. Clean places where mold grows (damp or moldy corners, bathroom floors, windowsills, etc.) with a bleach solution or white vinegar.
  • Swab the insides of your baby's cheeks four times day with baking soda and water (mix 1 tsp. baking soda in 1 cup of water). Or, coat the inside of the mouth and your nipples with yogurt that contains active cultures.
  • Spray moist areas (baby's armpits, folds of skin, under breasts) with 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar diluted in 1 cup of water. Do this several times a day until two weeks after symptoms disappear. Dust slippery elm powder on your nipples and folds of baby's skin to keep them dry, as well as to help with healing.
  • Keep nipples exposed to air and sunlight as much as possible. Do not wear nipple shields and change breast pads often. Go bra-less, if possible, and change your shirt as soon as it becomes moist from nursing. Thrush thrives on milk and moisture.
  • After nursing, wash your nipples with apple cider vinegar (1 T. to .50 cup water). Wash it off before nursing again.
  • Olive oil has anti-fungal properties. Apply olive oil or an herbal salve made in an olive oil base to your nipples. Find one that does not need to be washed off.
  • Myrrh, oregon grape root, black walnut, goldenseal, olive leaf and pau d'arco are anti-fungal herbs. Our Diaper Rash & Thrush Relief is effective on thrush infected nipples.
  • Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) is an anti microbial made from grapefruit seeds and pulp. GSE is recommended by lactation consultants to fight thrush. Use 10 drops GSE to one ounce distilled water. Swab this solution on mom's nipples and inside baby's mouth (on gums, cheeks and tongue) every hour. Also, swab baby's mouth prior to nursing and mom's nipples after nursing. Be aware, it does have a very bitter taste! For more information on Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) and recommended directions for use, see Dr. Jay Gordon'swebsite.
  • Get plenty of rest.

What body/personal care products should I avoid? TOP

It is prudent to remember that anything you put on your skin during pregnancy can potentially reach the fetus. When it comes to the delicate skin of your baby, it is even more important to use only those products that are gentle and nurturing.

The FDA has banned just nine chemicals from cosmetics compared to the European Union which has banned more than 1000. A product that is labeled as being "natural" may be mixed up with synthetic dyes or fragrances. Many expensive products are full of the same ingredients and harsh chemicals as the less expensive brands. And, many "common" synthetic ingredients are now being linked to conditions such as allergies, asthma, chronic fatigue syndrome, testicular abnormalities, decreased sperm counts, and breast cancer.

Shopping "natural" or "organic" is no guarantee that your products are free of dangerous chemicals. 1,4-Dioxaneis often present in the leading "natural" and "organic" branded products. The use of the cancer-causing petrochemical Ethylene Oxide generates 1,4-Dioxane as a by-product, which is suspected as a kidney toxicant, neurotoxicant and respiratory toxicant.

Make sure you check the packaging of all your products. Toxic plastic #3by its other name, PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or vinyl is considered by many experts to be the most dangerous, carcinogenic plastic. Another controversial chemical is bisphenol A (BPA)used in #7 polycarbonate bottles found in hard plastic such as baby bottles. These chemicals leach into the products that they contain. For more information on all the plastic packaging codes see Plastic Plagues.

Motherlove uses pure ingredients and safe, recyclable packaging for our products. We are proud of the fact that our products have expiration dates. You know that they are free of "shelf life" preservatives and any artificial ingredients. You expect that from "real food". You should expect that from your body care, as well.

Below is a list of the some of the most prevalent ingredients found in "natural" body care products and their effects on the human body.

  1. Ceteareth-6 — The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) panel has placed a warning on this ingredient that it be excluded from products used on injured or damaged skin.
  2. Coal Tar — in 1993, the FDA issued a warning to consumers about coal tar being a possible cancer risk. Coal tar appears in many hair dyes and strong dandruff and psoriasis shampoos, but the FDA failed to ban it even though studies have linked it to cancer in lab animals. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that 71 hair-dye products contained ingredients derived from coal tar.
  3. Diethanolamine (DEA) or Triethanolamine (TEA) — These chemicals are often used as wetting agents, pH adjusters, as well as with many fatty acids to convert acid to salt (stearate), which then becomes the base for a cleanser. TEA causes allergic reactions including eye problems, hair and skin dryness. Both DEA and TEA are highly susceptible to contamination with nitrosamines, known to be potent carcinogens.
  4. Imidazolidinyl Urea and Diazolidinyl Urea — The most commonly used preservatives after parabens, these are well established as a primary cause of contact dermatitis (American Academy of Dermatology). They release high amounts of formaldehyde. Two trade names for these chemicals are Germall II and Germall 115. Neither of the Germall chemicals have good anti-fungal properties, so they must be combined with other preservatives. Germall 115 releases formaldehyde at just over 10°.
  5. Mineral Oil — A petroleum derivative that is found in many moisturizers and causes severe allergic reactions.
  6. Parabens — Methyl, Propyl, Butyl, and Ethyl — Widely used as cosmetic preservatives and antimicrobials, even though they are known to be toxic and a leading cause of contact dermatitis. In addition, methyl paraben combines benzoic acid with the methyl group of chemicals, which are highly toxic. These can appear on labels as p-hydroxybenzoate (or PHB) esters. Some studies have shown that parabens mimic estrogen in rodents. The chemicals also have been shown to stimulate growth of human breast-cancer cells in the lab. A University of Reading study, published in the January 2004 Journal of Applied Toxicology, found that 18 of 20 breast tumors studied contained significant concentrations of parabens.
  7. Petrolatum — This is a very cheap jelly made from mineral oil that causes such skin problems as photosensitivity and interference with the body's own natural moisturizing mechanism, which leads to dry skin and chapping. Oddly enough, this product often creates the very conditions it claims to alleviate!
  8. Phthalates — generally covered by the general term "fragrance," and readily absorbed by our fingernails, skin and lungs. In July 2005, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported finding the metabolized forms of dibutyl phthalates, used in nail polish and synthetic fragrance, in every person tested in their national "body burden" study. Phthalates can lead to liver cancer and birth defects in lab animals. A study published in May 2005 from the University of Minnesota, Environmental Health Perspectives, found a connection between phthalates and genital abnormalities in baby boys.
  9. Propylene Glycol — Ideally this ingredient is made up of a vegetable glycerin mixed with grain alcohol, both of which are natural. Usually however, it is a synthetic petrochemical mix used as a humectant, or substance that promotes moisture retention. In its synthetic form, it is known to cause allergic reactions, clogged pores, and blemishes.
  10. PVP/VA Copolymer — This is a petroleum-derived chemical used primarily in hairsprays and other cosmetics. Since the particles may contribute to foreign bodies in the lungs of sensitive persons, it is considered toxic.
  11. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate — A synthetic substance primarily used in shampoos for its detergent and foam-building abilities. It can cause eye irritations, skin rashes, hair loss, dry skin and allergic reactions. It is frequently disguised in pseudo-natural cosmetics with the parenthetic explanation that it "comes from coconut." In a 1983 report on the safety of sodium lauryl sulfate, The Journal of the American College of Toxicology concluded that "studies have indicated that sodium lauryl sulfate enters and maintains residual levels in the heart, lungs and the brain from skin contact."
  12. Stearalkonium Chloride — This chemical was developed by the fabric industry as a softener, and it is cheaper and easier to use in hair conditioning formulas than proteins or herbal components. It can cause allergic reactions.
  13. Synthetic Colors — Synthetic colors are used to make cosmetics "pretty" and, along with hair dyes, should be avoided as they are believed to be cancer-causing agents. They appear on labels as FD&C or D&C, followed by a color and a number; e.g., FD&C Red No. 6 / D&C Green No. 6.
  14. Synthetic Fragrances — Synthetic fragrances can contain as many as 200 ingredients. There is often no way of knowing what these chemicals are since the label simply states "Fragrance", and these items do not have to list their chemical constituents. Potential problems caused by these chemicals are headaches, dizziness, rashes, hyperpigmentation, coughing, and vomiting.

Earth Mama Angel Baby FAQ TOP

Are all of your products really organic?
It's a sensible question, especially in light of the many products claiming dubiously to be natural or organic. Mama uses 100% certified organic herbs in all her teas, unless there isn't a certified organic option to be had. You can check out our Read My Ingredients page to find out exactly what is in each product. Many are certified by QAI as "100% Organic," and some are certified as "Made with Organic Ingredients" which means they contain over 70% organic ingredients. Each product has as many organic ingredients as we can pack into it,
but some essential ingredients aren't available as organic yet.

But, what does "organic" really mean?
It means that the plant was grown with respect for the earth, the soil, the farmer and you, the consumer. Organic farms adhere to strict standards, growing crops without the use of harmful pesticides or the usual dose of toxic chemical fertilizers. There's not really a short answer, but Mama's done the research so you don't have to. Just click on over to Mama's Reading Room and check out the info under the heading
"Why Organic?"

Why aren't ALL of your ingredients organic?
Simply put, some ingredients just don't exist in an organic form, such as Vitamin E oil, and some ingredients are not available certified organic. Sometimes the herbs we use are not cultivated, they grow in the wild and are harvested with respect for sustainability and the integrity of the plant population. Since Mama is a member of United Plant Savers, we do our best to support practices that ensure healthy population of herbs growing in the wild. You will see these herbs listed as
"wild harvested."

Are your teas loose blends?
Yes they are. But don't be wary of loose tea! If you need a little primer on how to properly brew tea for maximum benefit, check out
Mama's Tea 101 page.

How many cups of tea does a jar make?
Our teas are packed by weight, and the jars vary in size. For any of our teas, the regular jar will brew about 12-15 cups of tea, the larger jar will brew about 25-30 cups, depending, of course, on how strong you like your tea! We recommend using about 1 tablespoon of tea blend for each cup of water.

Do you use lanolin, SLS, parabens or other synthetic preservatives?
No, and we never have.

Should I be worried about using that stuff?
There are a lot of uneasy concerns about some of the ingredients commonly used in personal care products. Mama never wants you to have to worry about those things, so she has worked very hard to formulate the purest, safest products for mamas and babies. Over the years Mama has gathered a LOT of research, which she loves sharing, and she encourages you to educate yourself. Please visit our
Reading Roomfor informative articles on Hidden Carcinogens in Baby Care products, or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.

If you don't use synthetic preservatives, what do you use to preserve your products to make sure they are safe and free of bacteria and mold?
Our teas and herbal bath and compress mixes are sealed in UV coated amber jars to protect the delicate herbal goodness in the leaves and roots from the light, and to help them resist temperature changes. Our oil-based products, salves and massage oils don't contain water so they don't need a preservative to keep out the unpleasantries that can grow there. Instead they need antioxidants like natural Vitamin E to keep the oils and essentials from becoming oxidized.
Lotions, on the other hand (or knee, or elbow), are made by emulsifying (blending) oils and water. And because of their rich, natural ingredients, they can become a perfect medium for nasty bacteria or mold. To combat that, our natural preservative system is an organic alcohol extract of skin healing and moisturizing herbs. Beneficial to you, and naturally preservative too!

I have an expired product - will it hurt me, or my baby?
We stamp a Sell By date on all of our products as a freshness guide for our resellers and customers, but this isn't an expiration date. To be sure of the quality of our products we keep a sample from each batch of each product we make. Some products in this sample inventory are over five years old and are still just fine! That said, you should always use your own best judgment, if it smells "off," don't use it. You can extend the life of oils and salves by making certain they stay cool and out of direct sunlight. So, don't store Earth Mama Angel Baby(r) products on a windowsill or in the trunk of your car and they should be fine for at least a year past the Sell By date.

I need to know if your products will irritate my or my baby's allergies.
You are the best judge of what is safe for you and your baby. You know your body best. Please refer to our
Read My Ingredients! (www.earthmamaangelbaby.com) page to see if any of your known allergens are in our products. If you have specific questions or concerns about product safety, allergies or ingredients, it is always best to consult with your Midwife or Naturopathic Doctor or another trusted healthcare professional who is knowledgeable about the use of herbs during pregnancy and when breastfeeding a baby.

I am vegan, are all Mama's products vegan and cruelty-free?
Yes they are, certified vegan in fact! We use no animal products, like lanolin, and our balms are made using plant based wax instead of beeswax.

Why are there little white specks in my Natural Nipple Butter and Angel Baby Bottom Balm?
The white specks are
shea butter and may appear in both the Angel Baby Bottom Balm and Natural Nipple Butter. When shea butter is cold, it solidifies. When it is warmed by contact with your skin, it should quickly melt and become a soft consistency again. Products made with natural ingredients like herbs and essential oils may vary in appearance across lots and final product batches, as they have no yucky additives to create false consistency.

Is Angel Baby Bottom Balm good to use with cotton diapers?
You bet! In fact, we've received wonderful feedback from you - our customers - saying that it is the BEST with cloth diapers!

Do I need to wash the Natural Nipple Butter off my breasts before breastfeeding my Angel Baby?
No, it's safe for both you and your angel baby.

Why did my Angel Baby Shampoo & Body Wash turn cloudy?
It's because during shipping it just got too cold. When the temperature drops, the natural fatty acids in these products begin to solidify and appear cloudy. Just pop your Angel Baby Shampoo & Body Wash into a cup of warm water and it will clear right up. Cloudy or clear, it will lather up and clean your pure, organic angel baby naturally!

I'm Confused about EWG's Skin Deep ratings, can you explain?

We love the hardworking people at the Environmental Working Group and we think their Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database is invaluable when trying to find the safest products for your family. In fact, Earth Mama Angel Baby was one of the first signers of EWG's "Compact for Safe Cosmetics, a pledge to formulate products that do not use ingredients that are known or suspected to cause certain health harms."

There is a mistake in the listed ingredients of some of our products, and we've been trying and trying (and trying and trying) to help EWG to fix the problem. Instead of removing the incorrect data, they mark the product as "old formulation" which just makes everything very confusing. For instance, Skin Deep lists glycerin as an ingredient in
Angel Baby Shampoo & Body Wash. We have always used kosher vegetable glycerin, for extra safety, but we can't get the mistake corrected. For the most accurate information for any of our products, go to our Read My Ingredients page.

The health and safety of mamas and babies has always been our #1 concern, it's why Mama got into the business in the first place! So if you ever have any questions about any of the ingredients we use,
ask Mama. If Mama wouldn't use it on her own angel babies, she won't let it out of the building.

How do I heat my Booby Tubes™ if I don't have a microwave?

One of our intrepid Mama’s Helpers took this question on, and took some Booby Tubes™ home for a little experiment in her own oven. The results were terrific — as long as you don’t forget to take the Booby Tubes™ out of the oven! Preheat your oven to the lowest setting (that was 170 degrees on Mama’s Helper’s oven), place your Booby Tubes™ in an oven-safe dish, away from the heating element, and heat them for 10-15 minutes. After 15 minutes they don’t seem to get much warmer, so that seems to be all the time they need. Please set a timer and keep a very close eye on them while they are in the oven! One advantage of the microwave is it shuts off automatically, so with a regular oven you’ll have to be more diligent.

Why do you use plastic jars? Why don't you use glass jars?

Our commitment to honor the earth and her valuable resources extends to our packaging as well as our natural and organic ingredients. We are even the proud recipients of the BRAG
(Business Recycling Award Group)for our green practices, and we are always looking for ways to better what we do. At this point, the plastic PET bottles and jars we use are the safest containers for both our products and our customers. Our containers are colored to keep out harmful UV rays. The PET we use is the most readily recyclable and the safest plastic manufactured. There’s some great information about PET bottles and jars at this link.

Our products were originally packaged in glass, until we found out a woman was cut opening a jar of Natural Nipple Butter that had broken in transit. The last thing we want to do is hurt a mama with sore nipples! And we know that containers can end up bumping and slipping around changing tables and bathrooms, and can end up in little mouths too, so we choose to package our diaper cream, nipple cream and baby oil in tumble and teething resistant plastic jars.

Our opinion is that glass presents a much bigger safety concern than plastic. And as always, we’re looking for the safest, purest way to keep mamas and babies happy!

Moby Wrap FAQ TOP

Q: Can you describe the differences between the Moby Wrap and other carriers?
A: There are lots of different carriers on the market today: front packs, slings, wrap arounds, and more. The big difference between slings and wraps is that the wrap uses both shoulders, as well as your back, to carry the weight of your baby. Most front packs have narrow straps, buckles, or rings, which often cause discomfort. There are several wrap-around carriers available with a variety of special features: stretchy vs. non-stretch, cotton vs. cotton-lycra blend, solids vs. patterns, basic vs. embellished, expensive vs. economical, square vs. tapered ends, etc. Our advice would be to look for the features that are most important to you and choose accordingly. The Moby Wrap is made of 100% soft cotton. The fabric feels like your favorite T-shirt. The edges are tapered, making it easy to tie. The Moby Wrap is currently available in 11 solid colors.

Q: What is the difference between the Moby Wrap and the Moby D?
A: The main difference between the Moby Wrap and the Moby D is the distinctive fabric panel in the center. The panel is created from cozy fleece, woven cotton, or Asian silk. While all fabric panels add aesthetically to the Moby Wrap, the fleece provides additional warmth and the woven and silk fabric panels add a section of non-stretch fabric to help support the baby. The edges of the Moby D are seamed rather than over-locked, ensuring that the Moby D will hold its shape after extended use. We also made each end of the Moby D a different length so the knot would be at the side instead of the front or back.

Q: I am concerned about spine development. Will wearing my baby in the Moby Wrap affect her spine development?
A: While worn in the Moby Wrap, the baby is supported by three pieces of fabric, reducing the strain on baby’s spine. When wrapping the baby in the Joey or facing out position, be sure to spread the fabric not only in the baby’s center, but all the way down to the hollow of the knees in order to minimize the strain on the spine.

Q: What is a “limited edition color”?
A: Each season, we offer a color that is not part of our regular selection and produce just one order of several hundred wraps. Once the inventory runs out, we will not make any more of this particular color (with the exception of sienna, which our customers loved so much that it became a standard color).

Q: Why are the turquoise and sand wraps more expensive?
A: The turquoise and sand fabrics are treated with the Rayosan process, by Clariant. This technology allows the increase of Sun Protection Factor without changing the appearance, handle and breathability of the fabric. You can imagine how excited we are to have this technology be part of the Moby Wrap fabric, which therefore offers another layer of protection for baby’s sensitive skin, especially before the age recommended for sunscreen use. Understandably, this process is a costly one and it means that we have to increase the price of the spring summer edition color, but only by $5. The suggested retail price for this wrap is $44.95.

Q: I washed my wrap according to the washing instructions and it shrank. Is that normal?
A: Because the Moby Wrap is 100% cotton, it may shrink slightly when laundered, which is perfectly normal. Once you start wearing your wrap again, it will stretch back to its original size. If you are unable to bring the ends back to the front, try tying the wrap in the back until it stretches back to its original size.

Q: I hear a lot about Kangaroo Care and the Moby Wrap. What does that mean?
A: Kangaroo Care has been studied in depth since 1983 when neonatologists Edgar Rey and Hector Martinez first implemented it in Bogota, Columbia. Kangaroo Care consists of placing a diaper clad premature baby in an upright position on a parent's bare chest - tummy to tummy, in between the breasts. The baby's head is turned so that the ear is above the parent's heart. Because of the width of the fabric, the Moby Wrap can be used for this purpose, covering up most of the parents’ body while providing this closeness to the premature infant.

Q: I live in a very warm climate. Can I use a Moby Wrap?
A: Yes you can. Because the Moby Wrap is made of a 100% cotton, the fabric breathes and should keep you cool in warmer climates. You might choose a lighter color wrap, like natural, moss, indigo, or lilac.

Q: I am a plus-size mom. Will the wrap fit me?
A: Yes it will. The Moby Wrap is 18 feet long and will fit larger moms and dads as well. When wrapping, you would simply tie a knot at your back. We can custom make larger wraps but rarely need to do that.

Q: I understand your products are manufactured in Thailand and was wondering about the working conditions.
A: Thank you for asking! From 2004 until 2006, the President of Moby Wrap and her family lived in Thailand and set up a Thai corporation that manufactures the Moby Wrap, the Moby D and the hand knit clothing. They rented a cute Thai home and converted it into a factory. All employees are adult women who enjoy excellent wages and benefits. The women who knit for the Moby Wear line pick up the patterns and yarn once a week and knit in their villages while surrounded by their children and extended family. Best of all, they love to get visits from customers all over the world who appreciate their work.

Q: Do you use organic cotton?
A: We now offer an EKO certified organic cotton version of our product: Organic Moby Select.

Q: I am a nursing mother and my chest is huge - can I still use a Moby Wrap?
A: The Moby Wrap will be a good choice for you. Because it wraps around your body, it will adjust to your curves beautifully.

Q: The center panel of my new Moby D is not in the middle of the wrap. Is it defective?
A: No, not at all. We purposely placed the panel a bit off-center, so that the knot would fall on your side, rather than your front or your back. From customer feedback, we found that parents prefer not to have the knot on their back (it makes sitting in a chair a bit uncomfortable) or their front (where it sometimes seemed to be in the way). We felt having the panel off center would eliminate the discomfort some customers were referring to.

What is Baltic Amber? TOP

Natural pain relief provided by Baltic Amber has many therapeutic remedies. Baltic Amber works by placing the necklace and/or bracelet on your body, this allows your skin to warm the amber beads which releases healing oils which are then absorbed into the blood stream. The active ingredient is succinic acid which is fossilised resin produced by plants 40 – 50 million years ago. In nature the resin would have been used by the tree as a nautral antibiotic against infection, viruses and physical attack.  The tree would use the resin like a plaster or wound dressing. Now the resin has been fossilised, its healing properties have been captured in the resin which are released once the amber is warmed (by the skin). Nobel-prize winner Robert Koch (1886) was the pioneer of modern bacteriology proved that succinic acid has a very positive influence on the human body.

In the 1930's and 40's, European biochemists discovered that succinic acid is an amino acid created naturally in every cell of the body capable of aerobic respiration, participating in the citric acid, or Krebs cycle . This is how carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are metabolized into energy. Wearing amber may also protect us against the negative influences of electrical equipment like computers, televisions, mobile phone and microwave ovens. Part of what's amazing about amber is that the chemical properties of the resin which when formed acted as a natural embalming agent, with both drying and anti-microbial properties. Ancient Egyptians actually used pine resin as an embalming agent, and doctors in the Civil War, lacking anything else, would sometimes slap tree resin on a wound as a disinfectant and saved lives that way.

Baltic amber teething necklaces are made to be worn by teething children to provide them with natural pain relief from teething symptoms. The Baltic amber teething necklace has been designed to ensure the safety of your child by knotting before & after each bead so in the event that the necklace does break (it will break if excessive force is applied) only one bead will come off and the remaining beads will stay intact. The clasp is made from an amber/plastic, with a plastic screw mechanism. The clasp is laboratory tested to release if excessive force is applied to the necklace, which ensures the highest safety. Unlike traditional clasps used on children’s necklaces (parrot clasp and ring) which do not release, they rely on the ring or necklace breaking to release. Every amber teething necklace has been hand-crafted by Baltic amber specialists with generations of experience who carefully polish and softly round the Baltic amber beads. Rounded polished beads (verses chips) are best as they lay comfortably against baby's skin. This allows maximum skin contact and gives added comfort to your child.
Baltic Amber Teething Necklaces Frequently Asked Questions:

Is it OK to wear the necklace 24/7 including when asleep?
We recommend you take the necklace off whenever your baby doesn't have supervision.

Will water hurt the necklace?
We recommend you avoid extended contact with water. With prolonged exposure the silk thread may become brittle.

When is it safe for my my baby to wear the necklace?
The necklace may be worn from 8 weeks onwards, or as soon as the baby starts teething or showing any signs of pain or discomfort from teething.

How long will my necklace last?
The teething necklaces are specifically designed for use with babies and are therefore extremely durable. With the right care, one necklace will last and become a treasured heirloom to pass down in the family.

My baby wants to chew on the necklace, is this OK?
No, the necklace is made for wearing, not for chewing. The easiest solution is to tuck it under their clothing and the necklace will quickly assume body temperature and the child will ignore it. You should use other teething aids such as chewing rings, soft-bristled toothbrush or a frozen washcloth to meet your baby's increased chewing needs.

Will this necklace solve my baby's teething problems on its own?
This necklace is a natural teething aid relief, it will assist with alleviating teething pain and will provide assistance with restlessness, irritability, acidity and drooling.

What does the amber do?
It reduces red inflamed cheeks and stimulates the thyroid glands to reduce drooling. Amber is associated with sunlight and warmth and reputed to boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, accelerates the healing of wounds, reduce inflammation of the throat, ear and stomach infections and respiratory disease. There are no tablets, medications or pastes that can compete with this amber teething necklace, the necklace is unique and has amazing results which are all natural.

Who makes them?
Each necklace is handcrafted in Eastern Europe by experienced craftsmen and are made from ancient Baltic Amber and beautifully designed to follow the centuries old European tradition of wearing amber to elevate teething pain.

What is amber made from?
Amber is not a stone and therefore warm to the touch, as well as very comfortable and light to wear. The key ingredient in amber is succinite - which is fossilised resin produced by plants 40 – 50 million years ago. In nature the resin would have been used by plants as an antibiotic against viruses, a substance healing cuts or a plaster for wound dressing. Now fossilised, its healing properties have been captured and are release once the resin has been warmed by the skin.

What research has been done on Amber?
The active ingredient in Baltic amber is succinic acid, which was analysed by the pioneer of modern bacteriology and Nobel-prize winner Robert Koch (1886). He confirmed its positive influences and discovered that there is no risk of the accumulation of surplus amounts of succinic acid in the human organism. Recent scientific research has also proved that succinic acid has a very positive influence on the human organism, it strengthens the body, improves immunity, the course of energy-related processes and the balance of acids. Current research shows that the micronization of amber improves its assimilation by the stress-weakened organism of the contemporary man. The unfavorable environmental conditions prevailing today block the natural flow of energy-related processes in cells. Blocks affect cellular metabolism and significantly weaken the immune system, but the natural energy of amber is able to stimulate its renewal.

Where else in nature is succinic acid found?
Succinic acid is found in many contemporary plants and is a common and indispensable food ingredient. However, deficiencies of succinic acid are frequent as it is rarely found in nature. Even unripe gooseberries and rhubarb stalks, which are the richest in the acid, contain a thousand times less of the acid than the Baltic amber- succinite.

Baltic amber vs other amber?
Baltic ambers healing properties are due to its high succinic acid content. Of all types of amber, Baltic amber contains the most succinic acid, which makes it the most valued. Succinic acid is not found in many fossil resins similar to amber.

Why buy this particular Amber?
Since the oldest times word "amber" had only one meaning - Baltic amber. However the processes that influenced the formation of amber have left their traces in different parts of the globe because they had an effect on not only resins of coniferous trees, but also on resins of leaf-bearing trees and even leguminous plants. Although 150 types of fossil resins are known in the world, these resins are not amber but its relatives, they are mostly found in Europe and America and each of them have their own name.

Why Natural pain relief vs chemicals?
Unlike teething gels or pain relief syrups, the traditional beaded amber necklaces imported from the Baltic region are a less intrusive remedy for the pain and side effects of teething, such as lack of appetite, upset tummies, ear ache, fevers and colds. A natural analgesic, amber will help calm a baby without resorting to drugs.

Who works with Amber?
Amber's anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties are also recognised by allopathic medicine. In Austria, Switzerland and Germany amber teething necklaces are sold in local pharmacies as doctors have long known about the healing properties of amber which include calmative, analgesic, anti-fever functions.

How is amber collected?
Even though many methods of amber production have been used throughout history, and those introduced in the last century were very perspective and efficient, collecting of amber pieces from the shore remains the most popular and lasting. Even today amber hunters, on the shore of the Baltic Sea near Karklë or Melnragë, if the cast of the net is successful, can catch 30-50 kg of amber.

Who can wear them?
Anyone and everyone! The teething necklaces are made for both girls and boys to wear. Anyone seeking a natural remedy for pain, inflammation and immunity support would benefit from wearing Baltic amber (also available in adult-size necklaces and bracelets).

What is so great about Agave Nectar? TOP
Agave Nectar has the following characteristics:

1) Because Agave Nectar is high in fructose, it enjoys all the benefits which continue to make fructose a preferred sweetening agent. It is sweeter than refined sugar (approximately 1.4 times sweeter); in fact, fructose offers an equivalent sweetness for nearly half the amount of carbohydrate calories. Fructose does not stimulate digestive insulin secretion as do other sugars. It is less disturbing to the glycemic index. In common parlance, it does not create a “sugar rush.”

2) Agave Nectar is produced in different grades varying in flavor and color.

The lighter grades of Agave Nectar are flavor neutral, enhancing the natural flavors of coffee, tea, fruit beverages, baked goods, fresh fruits, fruit smoothies, salad dressings, jams and jellies, ice cream, yoghurts, and various prepared foods, without altering their flavor. This is in marked contrast with bee honey, malt barley syrup, and certain other natural sugar substitutes that do alter the flavor of the products which they sweeten.

The amber and dark grades offer the delicate flavor of Agave with increasing intensity. The amber grade is much like honey and delicious in tea, suitable to sweeten a wide variety of foods, dry and hot cereals, pancakes, waffles, baked goods, protein drinks, and sauces. Heavier sauces such as BBQ, spaghetti, stews and meat glazes may be enhanced by the darker grades of this sweetener which deliver the rich and complex flavors distinctive to Agave.

3) Agave Nectar will not crystallize. It is high in purity and stable in composition. It is easy to store as it has a very long shelf life, approximately three years.

4) Agave Nectar is easy to handle. Because of its light viscosity, Agave Nectar is easy to handle in an industrial setting and pours easily as a table-top sweetener. It will never harden in the bottle. Agave Nectar is highly soluble and dissolves readily even in cold beverages such as lemonade or iced teas. Its light viscosity and solubility also make it ideal to sweeten cold cereals.

5) Agave Nectar is a moisture retainer. It increases the water retention properties of food. In bread and baked goods, Agave Nectar enhances product freshness due to its hygroscopic properties which act as humidifying agents, thereby increasing the shelf life of such products.

6) Agave Nectar is certified organic. The manufacturers have obtained organic certification from BCS Oeko Garantie Gmbh, a German firm accredited by the USDA. The Agave crops used in producing Agave Nectar are herbicide and pesticide free. Growers that supply the raw material will use only natural fertilizers and employ agricultural practices that meet organic certification standards. The manufacturers will also obtain organic certification on their manufacturing process.

7) Agave Nectar is KOSHER. The manufacturers have obtained KOSHER PAREVE certification: Special Kosher – Lepesach production certification for their plant.

8) Total Carbohydrate Grams: Serving Size: This product falls into the "honey" category, and thus its serving size is 1 tablespoon (note: tablespoon and not teaspoon). In turn, 1 tablespoon of Agave Nectar weighs 21 grams. Based on the fact that it contains on the average 77% solids, one serving (1 tablespoon) contains 16 grams total carbohydrates (21 grams x 77% = 16 grams).

9) Calories per Serving: A serving (1 tablespoon) contains 60 calories.

(One serving contains 16 grams of total carbohydrates. One gram of carbohydrate provides 4 calories. Therefore, 16 grams of total carbohydrate contains 64 calories, but a few of these calories are not digestible.)

10) Glycemic Index: This is a relatively new concept which can be important from a metabolic standpoint, especially to diabetics, along with athletes and grossly overweight individuals. The index is an indicator as to how much your blood sugar increases in 2-3 hours after specific food consumption. Most if not all carbohydrates are normally metabolized into the simple carbohydrate glucose, which in the glycemic index concept is arbitrarily assigned a value of 100. As a result, the higher a glycemic index food number is, the faster it raises your blood sugar level. Foods or ingredients with glycemic index numbers close to or above 100 present some significant health issues to diabetics, and in general, sweeteners of all kinds should be avoided by diabetics. Nonetheless, for those diabetics who choose to consume certain amounts of carbohydrates, Agave Nectar, it should be noted has a lower glycemic index than honey. Agave Nectar was found to have a glycemic index of 32. In contrast, honey has a reported glycemic index of 58, due to its higher ratio of glucose to fructose, as compared to the ratio of glucose to fructose in Agave Nectar. Please note: these values are based on using glucose as the reference point, which is the currently accepted approach relative to reporting glycemic index. Earlier, white bread was the reference point, but white bread composition can vary widely, and thus glucose is now the preferred base product.

The production of agave nectar is very similar to how a bee creates honey. The bee adds enzymes to the complex sugars of nectar, which changes it into the simple sugars making honey. It is also through enzymatic action that the complex sugar found in agave juice is changed into a simple sugar sweetener- Agave Nectar.
The raw agave juice is regularly harvested from living plants by Indian peoples native to central Mexico. To do so, they must slice off the top of the plant and hollow out its core. Then the plant is capped with a stone. The pineapple shaped agave plant secretes its nectar into the center of the plant, rather than into flowers like most plants do. It collects in the hollow center for several days, after which the milky white "juice" is removed by ladle, one plant at a time. In a way it is similar to tapping a tree for maple syrup collection.

Agave nectar is a newly created sweetener, having been developed during the 1990's. Originally, the blue agave variety was used. This is the same plant used in the manufacture of tequila. During the late 90's, a shortage of blue agave resulted in huge increases in cost and a sweetener based on this plant became uneconomical. Further research was done and a method using wild agave was developed. Overcoming the language barrier between the Indians able to supply the nectar from the wild agave on their land and the Spanish speaking local manufacturer was the key that finally unlocked a supply of raw material and has led to our bringing this wonderful new product to market.

What are the Dosages for Children's Remedies from Wishgarden Herbs? TOP

WishGarden's extracts for children are made with glycerine and are therefore sweeter and easier to take.  Most children like them and take them easily. Children's glycerites can be given directly, or for stronger tasting formulas or sensitive palates, can be placed in a small cup of juice or tea.

Children are more sensitive to herbs and medicines in general.  Suggested dosages are included on each bottle of WishGarden Children's remedies and supersede any guidelines in this essay.

Extra care should be taken to use the gentlest herbs possible when working with children, as they are sensitive and generally respond quickly. Only a few drops, no more than 10, of the most benign herbs are appropriate for infants.  WishGarden Herbs' Children's Line has been specially formulated for gentleness by a master herablist with 25 years experience.

WishGarden strongly recommends consulting a qualified practitioner before giving herbal formulas designed for adults to children.

How can I treat my child's earaches? TOP

Earaches are common in young children due to their developing physiology. The eustachian tube that provides drainage to the middle ear is very small in diameter and is more horizontal in orientation in children until about the age of seven, often impeding adequate drainage. Mucous producing foods often contribute to blocking this passage, and some have suggested that when a child is teething, the stress leaves a child's body more prone to infection.

Common symptoms of earaches in very young children include crying, pulling at the ear, nuzzling the head on one side repeatedly, a reddened cheek or ear, tilting the head to one side while fussing, and fever. Symptoms are usually accompanied by cold symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, runny eyes and general fussiness. Ear infection symptoms can also become present at the end of colds as a child seems to be getting better.

Relieving actions can include using a vaporizer and propping the child's head up with pillows that encourage drainage. Sometimes a gentle source of heat such as a warm heating pad or hot water bottle to lie the head and ear on, can be soothing. Many practitioners recommend limiting foods that could encourage mucous production, such as dairy products and wheat while an ear infection is present and for some time afterwards.

Herbal ear oil: WishGarden's herbal Mullein Ear Oil is best used at the first indication of symptoms or in conjunction with internal EarAche-Be-Gone extract. The oil can be gently warmed (make very sure it is not hot! by testing on your inner wrist). While a child lies on their tummy, head to one side with ear facing up, place drops in the ear slowly. Gently tug on the ear lobe between drops to allow air to escape. When the ear has several drops of oil inside, plug the ear with a small piece of cotton ball and leave in overnight or for 12 hours. We recommend treating both ears, even if only one has symptoms. Remove cotton in the morning and allow the ear to drain.

If your child does not respond to treatment, is in severe pain or shows no signs of improvement after two consecutive nights of treatment, please seek further medical attention. Some parents have found acupuncture and/or chiropractic to be effective treatments for prolonged or recurrent earaches.

As with all medical issues, seeking the advice of a qualified alternative medical practitioner is highly recommended.

Is the alcohol in tinctures safe during Pregnancy? TOP
Concern over alcohol consumption often leads pregnant women to question taking herbal tinctures that contain alcohol.

This concern has led us at WishGarden to research in greater detail the alcohol exposure of tinctures and well-being during pregnancy.

WishGarden routinely limits the amount of alcohol in our remedies for pregnant women, while still producing an effective herbal medicine. We use some alcohol, (usually 10%) to begin the extractive process and then add glycerine and water to complete the medicinal extraction. However some WishGarden remedies used by pregnant women still contain about 50% alcohol, such as Herbal Iron.

In taking this remedy, one might take as much as 2/3 of a dropperful 3 times daily. At this rate women have indicated that their hematocrit (a routine test to indicate the iron content of blood) has improved by 3-8 points in one week.

Taking this tincture daily, one would consume a 1 ounce bottle in about 2 weeks. This would mean that a pregnant woman is consuming approximately 0.5 or one half of an ounce of alcohol over a 2 week period. This translates to one quarter of an ounce per week. To figure daily dose, .25 divided by 7 days is .035 of an ounce of alcohol per day.

Some studies claim that drinking one ounce of alcohol per day may affect birth weight or increase the risk of miscarriage. And general medical opinion holds that there is no proven minimum safe level of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Studies concerning fetal alcohol syndrome focus primarily on chronic abusers of alcohol. For these women, fetal alcohol syndrome is among the top 3 causes of birth defects as well as low birth weight, spontaneous abortion, and other abnormalities.

Given the risks to a developing fetus, it is wise to be very cautious about alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Every pregnant woman must decide for herself whether the health benefit of the herbal remedy she is considering is outweighed by the limited exposure to alcohol in the remedy.

WishGarden strongly recommends choosing one of our remedies made specifically for pregnant and nursing women whenever possible. These contain, on average, between 10% and 20% alcohol and are formulated specifically for pregnant and nursing women.

When health issues require taking a regular adult tincture (50% alcohol), pregnant women should know that exposure is approximately 0.04 of an ounce of alcohol per approximately 3 dropperfuls of tincture.

What Herbs does Wishgarden Herbs suggest to avoid during Pregnancy? TOP
Herbs have become more and more popular as a means to improve health and alleviate symptoms during illnesses.  What isn't always commonly known is whether or not herbs are safe during pregnancy.

WishGarden Herbs specially formulates its remedies to avoid herbs that are known to cause problems during pregnancy.  However, please consult a qualified practitioner before taking any herbs during pregnancy.

Gestation is a wonderful time in a woman's life as there is much power and life-force in the changes that take place.  The first trimester is the most critical time in regards to changes in the environment, surfacing emotions, new foods introduced into the diet, and many common herbs that may cause stresses on the developing embryo.  This is not the time to start a purifying fast, make radical dietary changes or take cleansing or detoxifying herbs.  This is a time of building and strengthening.  Nourishment for the mother and the new one are the keys to a healthy pregnancy.

Everything that is ingested will pass through the placenta.  This will include potential food allergens, drugs, alcohol, caffeine, tobacco and simple routine x-rays from your dentist.  Those mentioned are called teratogens.  Teratogens are substances that are known to cause birth defects, infertility, miscarriage, low birth weight and impair mental development.  The list also includes antacids, aspirin, antihistamines, herbal diuretics, laxatives, steroid precursors, hair dyes, excessive vitamin consumption, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, industrial pollutants, and contact with cat feces.  There are also risks associated with amniocentesis, electronic fetal monitoring and many herbs.

Emmenagogues are a class of herbs that help promote menstrual flow and may cause spotting or even miscarriage during pregnancy.  There are at least 50 commonly known emmenagogue herbs.  Many are also considered oxytocic.  Oxytocin is a short-acting hormone naturally produced by a pregnancy woman's body that produces uterine contractions at the appropriate time.  During pregnancy, any herbs (or other medications) that are not totally necessary, should be avoided unless they provide nutritional support.

Use discretion when buying and using herbs during pregnancy.  Consult a qualified practitioner.  If you must take herbs for a health condition, use formulas designed for pregnancy.  Exercise moderation in all things.  Thoughts and feelings are important.  Make it a priority to create time and space for yourself to relax, dream and connect with your baby.

The following is a list of common herbs that are not safe during pregnancy because of their stimulating, irritating, or cathartic action.  This is not a complete list.  Please consult a qualified practitioner before taking herbs during pregnancy.

Diuretics:  Buchu Leaf, Horsetail, Juniper Berries, Cubeb berries
Laxatives: Flaxseed, Senns, Aloe, Castor Oil, Rhubarb root, Barberry, Buckthorn, Cascara Sagrada
Steroid Precursors:  Ginseng, Licorice, Hops, Sage, Agave, Dong Quai, Angelica
Emmenagogues:  Osha, Lemon balm, Birthwort, Rue, Tansy, Pennyroyal, Motherwort

What are the Basics of Taking Herbal Extracts? TOP

Herbal extracts are a wonderfully healing method of taking care of common ailments and health concerns.  How one takes herbal remedies depends on the type of remedy indicated and the specific ailment or health concern.  There are three general types of herbal extracts offered by WishGarden Herbs.

The first is a tonic.  A tonic is designed to gently support healing and health over a longer term process.  It is designed to help nourish and balance bodily systems such as the endocrine system or nervous system. A tonic is best taken daily over many weeks.

The second is an acute (or structure-function) extract.  An acute extract is designed to help speed healing of specific acute conditions over a shorter term, such as Earache-Be-Gone or Serious Cough.

The third is a symptom reliever.  A symptom reliever is designed to address the symptoms of an ailment or health concern, and less specifically the ailment itself, although we do formulate symptom relievers to help in healing the ailment.

Please note that herbal remedies are medicines and should be used carefully. If you have any questions or concerns, please consult a qualified professional herbal practitioner before taking an herbal remedy. We highly recommend that you begin to familiarize and educate yourself on the use of herbs through the many wonderful books on the topic.  Please consult your local library, independent bookseller, or Amazon for books on herbs and herbal remedies.

General Guidelines:  Please take WishGarden Herbal remedies according to the suggested use directions on the label.  Please note that most WishGarden dosages are dropperfuls, not "drops", except for infants and young children. If you are unsure of your sensitivity, please begin with a small dose and consult a qualified professional herbal practitioner in your community. WishGarden Herbs remedies are well-known for being tasty and easy to take, but taste sensitivities vary.  Dosages can be taken directly under the tongue or placed in a small amount of water or juice, depending on preference.  Please do not exceed the recommended dosages on the label, except for double dosing for symptom relief, unless instructed to by a qualified professional practitioner.

Taking TONICS:  Tonics should be taken over a longer term.  4 -6 weeks is the usual recommended period for tonics.  Examples of WishGarden Herbs' tonics are Daily Immune for Kids, Deep Stress for adults, Wise Changes for women.  Our label will say whether an herbal remedy is a tonic.  We recommend taking WishGarden Herbs tonic remedies 1 to 3 times a day over a period of several weeks.  We sell larger sized bottles of tonics (as well as all our remedies) to make it easier to take them over a longer period. To find out more about 4 oz, 8 oz, 16 oz and 32 oz bottles, please contact us.  For more specific dosing information, please read the product label and consult a qualified herbal practitioner regarding your specific health concern.

Taking SYMPTOM RELIEVERS:  Many of WishGarden Herbs' remedies are designed to relieve symptoms of common health complaints.  Examples of symptom relievers are Allergy Relief, Cold Symptoms, and Digestive Ease.  We recommend taking these products according to the directions on the label.  However, they are designed to also be taken in a double dose to improve symptom relief as follows:  Double Dosing - take one dose and wait ten to 15 minutes.  If your symptoms are not relieved, take another dose.  Wait another 10 to 15 minutes.  You may repeat this dosing for a total of 3 times within a 30-45 minute period to aid symptom relief.  We recommend that you then wait several hours before repeating another dosage.

Taking ACUTE REMEDIES (or structure-function remedies) : WishGarden Herbs is well-known for formulating powerful therapeutic remedies to address acute health concerns. Depending on severity of health concern, dosing should be maintained at 2 to 3 times a day for the next 3 or 4 days to prevent a return of the illness.

Our Kidz SuperFood contains carrageenan, is it safe/what is it?

There is some confusion about carrageenan which has cast an unfortunate light on the ingredient. Poligeenan is a chemically degraded derivative of carageenan which is used for industrial (non-food) purposes. Although poligeenan does not posses the thickening or stabilizing properties of carrageenan, it was improperly named "degraded carrageenan" and for a short time the word "carrageenan" was used ambiguously and might refer to either food-grade or degraded carrageenan.

Due to this confusion, the US Adopted Names Council determined that "poligeenan" was a more accurate and descriptive name for the chemically degraded form of carrageenan. While poligeenan has shown unfavorable health effects in studies, food-grade carrageenan has no known toxicity or carcinogenicity and is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the US Food & Drug Administration.

Unfortunately, because the two ingredients were referred to by one common name for a short time, many people have been left with the mistaken impression that the negative health effects shown for poligeenan are true of food-grade carrageenan. Food-grade carrageenan is an entirely safe and appropriate all natural ngredient for our Kidz SuperFood.

Are our containers BPA (bisphenol A) free?

Yes, all of our product containers are BPA free. We use the highest quality #1 PETE containers for our organic Wheat Grass powder and tablets and Green SuperFood capsules) and #2 HDPE containers for the rest of our product line.

BPA is found mostly in polycarbonate plastics such as #7. It is probably best to avoid using these containers if possible. There is evidence that heating these containers may cause leaching so microwaving etc is not recommended. Many canned foods are also lined with plastics containing BPA and liquids are more susceptible to any potential leaching than powders.

What do Amazing Grass products do for me?

Life’s daily functions, such as digestion, stress, exercise, and the consumption of processed foods, coffee or alcohol all form acid. When your body’s pH is in the acidic range, it retains water to dilute the acidity and stores fat to protect the body’s organs from the acidity.

Amazing Grass wheat and barley grass has a high alkalizing effect, which helps restore the balance between acidity and alkalinity in our body. Most processed foods are acidic, and when we consume too many of them, the acidity-alkalinity balance is upset. Our cells cannot effectively function if our body is out of balance. Prolonged acidity can lead to stress of our body’s cells and organs and ultimately may lead to illness and disease. Cleansing and detoxifying our body will balance the acidity-alkalinity ratio resulting in rejuvenated cellular activity. After our body’s pH levels are balanced, you will notice an increase in energy, stamina and less need for sleep. Consuming Amazing Grass may also lead to a decreased craving for junk food, sweets and may limit overeating.

Amazing Grass has many live enzymes that help aid in digestion and other bodily functions. In addition to the live enzymes, Amazing Grass is also high in naturally produced anti-oxidants that neutralize free radicals and protect the skins' connective tissues. There are many testimonials from wheat grass consumers that have noticed an improvement of their skin’s complexion and overall appearance.

I am drained of energy by the end of the day. Will wheat grass really help?

There is a good chance it will. Not only does wheat grass give support to nutritional deficiencies, it also eliminates waste that clogs your blood, cells, tissues and organs.

Ann Wigmore, author of the Wheat Grass Book writes; “Each of us is the keeper of ten trillion little batteries called cells. Like flashlight batteries, our cells hold a charge of electricity. In order for this charge to be strong and steady we need to have a steady supply of proper nutrients… With the addition of wheat grass and raw foods to your diet, your cells will store a maximum electrical charge, and you will have plenty of energy.”

Most likely your Amazing Grass product is still fine to consume. Our products are dehydrated and very low in moisture content. However, as long as stored properly (in a dry cool place) there is a good chance that your Amazing Grass product is still in great shape and safe to consume. We know many of our consumers (including all our employees) have traveled with an opened container for weeks at a time without cold storage. Best of all, it is a green leafy vegetable...so you are getting your quota of greens everyday.

Can I mix Amazing Grass products with hot beverages?

Although we always recommend mixing our drink powders with cold or room temperature liquids, the short answer is yes. You can think of the dehydrated fruits and vegetables in our superfood drink powders similar to how you would think of heating other common fruits and vegetables. There are some heat sensitive nutrients like beta-carotene and enzymes that tend to have their nutritive values compromised when heated above 118 degrees. Think of eating raw spinach or cooked spinach. When it’s raw it is higher in beta-carotene and enzymes. Once you cook it, the levels of these heat sensitive nutrients begin to dissipate. However, even when heated there are still numerous beneficial nutrients that you are consuming. Essentially it is better to consume superfoods even when heating them, then not at all. If heating is required for taste considerations, we recommend heating your beverage first and then mixing in your superfood drink powder.

Do your products support a Vegan lifestyle?

Yes, we do support a Vegan lifestyle. All of our Amazing Grass products are 100% Vegan!

Are your greens raw or uncooked?

Yes, our greens are raw and have not been cooked. Foods are generally considered raw if they are dehydrated at temperatures under 117 degrees. We dehydrate our greens using a specially designed low temperature dehydrator. The cell temperature of the leaves doesn’t get above 107 degrees. This allows them to retain maximum levels of heat sensitive nutrients like beta-carotene, phytonutrients and enzymes. There are many raw food chefs around the world that use our greens in their favorite recipes.
